"I received a gift certificate for a pregnancy massage from Melissa in my third trimester.
It was the most thoughtful gift I could have been given during that
exciting, yet uncomfortable and physically taxing stage. I had various
degrees of discomfort and pain in my hips, legs and back. Melissa made
me feel more comfortable than I had in weeks, gently and expertly
relieving painful spots. She gave relief to aches I didn't think could
be relieved, and I left feeling more refreshed and energetic than I'd
thought it was possible to feel. It was wonderful to feel so cared for
and nurtured at a time of life when all my energy was going into
nurturing my baby. Melissa has healing
hands!"
It really was a wonderful massage! - Bronwyn

Pregnancy Massage
|
-->
-->
The fundamentals of pregnancy massage were first presented to me in my basic
training courses in 2005. In August 2010 I took a 35 hour course called
Pregnancy Massage for the Childbearing Year at Healing Arts Institute in Roseville,
CA from Stephanie Halderman.
I love pregnancy massage because pregnant women have such peaceful energy
that is wonderful to be around. Good mothers choose to give up part of
their lives to create a good person to fit in our society. It is the
most important and tiring job that begins the second she finds out she is
pregnant. Women quickly realize that she is not just taking care of
herself anymore; she is also taking care of her baby inside her. Doing
massage allows me to help mom to take care of herself, which in turn takes
care of the baby. A full circle happens when I get to take care of both
mommy and baby. It brings me great joy when women tell me how great
they feel afterwards.
I can really relate through my own experience of pregnancy, the fatigue,
and the physical and mental stress a woman goes through. I know
that the massage I give is so much more in tune now, and I love
the work I am doing even more. My son Jb was born January 7, 2010.
It is very important to find a massage therapist who is
knowledgeable in pregnancy massage. First, please ask your doctor if it
is alright for you to receive massage, especially if you are a high risk
pregnancy.
It is important for your therapist
to know:
- The acupressure points
to avoid
- How to avoid the
release of blood clots
- Essential oils and
lotions that are not permitted during pregnancy
- Proper positioning during
a massage

Pregnancy Massage (90 minutes or
more recommended)
If you are having a high risk pregnancy please check with your
doctor before coming in for a massage. Melissa has specific training and
knowledge of areas which could potentially create labor or other
complications.
Massage will ease the pain from the weekly changes your body
will endure, decrease the stress created by this life changing event, and
will bring balance and help maintain a healthy pregnancy. Body positioning on
the table is mostly side-lying or seated depending on how far along you
are. Belly massage is only done upon request and otherwise will be fully draped
at all times to make you feel safe and secure.
Postpartum massage (90 minutes or
more recommended)
Women are welcome to bring their infants in up until they are
able to crawl or five months of age. Getting a massage while your baby is
snuggled against you can be a very bonding experience. There may be
concerns about baby crying, but for the most part, when mommy is calm, baby is
calm. Massage will help ease the pain while your body is reshaping, decrease the
feeling of fatigue, will aide the the process of eliminating hormones released
and medications possibly given during birth, and can really lessen the affects
of "baby blues", a common depression mothers experience after giving birth.
Positioning on the massage table may vary from side lying, to seated, to face up
or face down, all depending on the state of the mother.

Benefits of Prenatal Massage for Baby
in the Womb
Prenatal massage allows for the beginning of mother and baby bonding. I had a client write a letter to me once that said, “during the massage, maybe because I was so relaxed, I felt so incredibly connected to the baby, like I was holding him in my arms instead of him being invisible to me in the womb. It was such a nice feeling. THANK YOU!”
Pregnancy can be a
wonderful time in a woman's life. In a very short amount of time
the body goes through so many changes physically and mentally as a baby grows
inside. Research has found that stress and anxiety can affect the
development of an unborn baby. Stress can be due to the physical and
emotional changes a woman goes through during pregnancy. When a mother's heart
rate and blood pressure go up, the blood supply to the uterus and baby may
decrease by as much as sixty five percent. This decreases the baby’s heart
rate. This may cause:
- Possible premature
labor and low birth weight or miscarriages.
- Decreased blood flow
to the baby, which disrupts the development of the:
- Brain: Studies have found that after the baby is
born that they are not able to focus and learn a lot slower.
- Nervous system: After baby is born studies have found that
these infants are more irritable and restless, and can have
digestive disturbances. As a result they tend to cry more.
- Immune system: As a result the baby will
be sicker after birth.
- Stress and fear may
also prolong labor causing complications with the baby.
